All fire extinguishers located in a business must be inspected by a licensed technician at least once a year. It is the owner's responsibility to get their fire extinguishers inspected. If the extinguishers do not get a yearly inspection, the owner may get a fine from the Fire Marshal and can be shut down for business if the problem is not corrected. |
On top of the yearly inspection, extinguishers need a six year maintenance and hydrostatic test every so many years. A six year maintenance is only performed on most Dry Chemical, Dry Powder, and Halogenated extinguishers every six years. Hydrostatic testing is performed on all extinguishers every five or twelve years depending on the extinguisher type. A certified technician will inform the owner if one of these services in needed when they are called to do an inspection. |
All fire extinguishers must be mounted on a wall or in a cabinet unless it is a wheeled extinguisher. The extinguisher must be at least 3 inches off the floor. A fire extinguisher that is 40 pounds or less must be mounted no higher than 5 feet. While a fire extinguishers that is greater than 40 pounds must be mounted no higher than 3 feet. |
A monthly inspection of all the extinguishers at the business is to be performed by the owner. A monthly inspection is needed to make sure the extinguisher is in operable condition and is still easily accessible. If anything seems to be wrong with the extinguisher, a licensed technician should be called to fix the problem. |
